# Seals Explained - Block, Parry, and Harden

Seals allow you to customize your defensive action in Mortal Shell 2. You can block, parry, or harden depending on which Seal you have equipped. Because your defensive action is tied to your seal, you can swap them out at any time. All of the seals are available early on, with the last 2 seals coming right after you finish the prologue and reach the Marrow Keep. You begin with the Untarnished Seal. This grants you the ability to block enemy attacks.
As you progress through the game you gain 3 more seals, each of which offers a new defensive mechanic. With Vatra's Seal you can harden, deflecting enemy attacks and potentially inflicting break damage. The Seal of the Infinite lets you parry, this has timing similar to perfect block but offers you no defense if you mistime it. Then there's the Slayer Seal, which is Mortal Shell 2's version of an easy mode. You gain break damage on your Sidearm and riposting an enemy heals you while granting resolve. Read on to learn more about each of the game's 4 seals, how to get them, and how to use them.

## Untarnished Seal

You begin the game with the Untarnished Seal, this allows you to block enemy attacks (L1/LB). Each time you block, you take break damage proportional to the strength of the blow. If your break bar fills, you're stunned for a short duration. You can reset your break bar by avoiding break damage for a bit.
If you time your block to just before an attack connects, you can perfect block. This negates your break damage and inflicts break damage on the enemy. Fill their break bar to stun them and execute a brutal riposte. When you successfully execute a perfect block your sword flashes gold and the clash releases more sparks.
You can parry ranged attacks, including thrown boulders. But unfortunately, this does not build break damage on the enemy which threw/shot something at you.
Tip - Better early than late.
When it comes to perfect blocking, it's better to block early than it is to block late. If you block too early, you can hold your block (L1/LB) until the attack connects. You still take the break damage, but it's better than taking the full hit.
Getting into the habit of blocking also helps you perfect block as a number of attacks can be perfect blocked earlier than you'd expect based on the animation.
Red attacks are un-blockable, you need to dodge these. The warning marker appears and then flashes as the circle expands. Use dodge (B/Circle) to avoid the attack. Grab attacks are a type of red attack which can be particularly difficult to deal with due to their fast animations.

## Vatra's Seal

You get Vatra's Seal after fighting the Tar Golem in the prologue. This functions similarly to block, but there are some key differences! When you harden, the next attack that strikes you is negated. If you harden right before an attack lands you "perfect harden" inflicting break damage on the enemy.
You Cannot Harden Red Attacks
Instead, you need to dodge them the same as if you were using the Untarnished Seal. You can however harden/perfect harden ranged attacks!
Hold your defensive button (L1/LB) to harden, unlike a Block which interrupts your action, this can be done mid attack! While hardened you're invulnerable to the next attack. If you release the button, or take a hit the harden effect ends and your action resumes. You then need to wait for the harden gauge (the small bar below your health bar) to fill before you can harden again.
If you harden right as an enemy attacks you perform a perfect harden. This not only instantly refills your harden gauge, but it inflicts break damage on the enemy. Timing is particularly important against multi-hit attacks as if you don't execute a perfect harden you can only stop one hit in the sequence.

## Seal of the Infinite

The Seal of the Infinite allows you to parry, giving you a small window to hit L1/RB. If executed successfully you deal more break damage than a perfect block or a perfect guard meaning you can riposte enemies more frequently (often breaking normal foes in a single parry). However, if you parry too early, or too late, it does nothing and you take the full hit. This is a high risk / high reward seal that is recommended for more experienced players.

### How to get the Seal of the Infinite

After completing the Prologue and reaching Marrowkeep, you can unlock the Seal of the Infinite. Head into the Beacon chamber (with Zhirelle's room behind you) and turn left into the underground area. Immediately take a left and head down to the arena made of bone.
Sester Genessa is waiting for you in the center of the arena. Speak to her and complete her block tutorial. After you riposte her, she gives you the infinite seal. Optionally, you can speak to her again for a tutorial on how to use it.

## Slayer Seal

- With the Slayer Seal equipped your Sidearm deals break damage.
- When you Riposte you gain Health / Resolve.
- Hold L1/LB to use the Slayer Punch, a powerful charge attack. You are invulnerable during the dash, it deals massive break damage, and automatically Ripostes enemies when you break them.
WARNING - Equipping The Slayer Seal Disables Achievements!
You are fine to pick the Slayer Seal up, but if you equip it you disable achievements. The game warns you about this when you attempt to equip the seal.
After you equip it you cannot go back and re-enable achievements!

### How to Get the Slayer Seal

Before you can get the Slayer Seal, you need to complete the Prologue and enter the Marrow Keep. Once you arrive, go to the room with the Beacon and head to your right (assuming Zhirelle is behind you and the Gloom Siphon room is ahead of you). This leads you to an overgrown cave area. Continue down the path until you see a crumbling throne and a red glow.
Approach the throne and claim the Slayer Seal. This serves as Mortal Shell 2's easy mode!

## What's the Best Seal to Use?

Which seal you use comes down to playstyle. The Untarnished Seal or Vatra's Seal is a good starting point. With the Untarnished Seal you can block enemy attacks and hold the block for an extra layer of safety. Meanwhile, Vatra's Seal lets you play more aggressively as you can harden mid-attack. However, if you don't perfect harden you need to wait a bit before hardening again.
The Seal of the Infinite is harder to use than both the Untarnished Seal, or Vatra's Seal. But if you master attack timings and become a parry god, you can use it to quickly break enemies for extra riposte damage. Just remember that you can't hold the button for an additional window of safety. When you mistime your parry, you're going to get hit!
Last up, if you want to lower the game's difficulty, and don't care about Achievements, use the Slayer Seal. With the right Sidearm you can stun-lock bosses by filling their break bar with a few quick shots, riposting them to refill your Resolve, and then doing it again.
