Every few weeks, PC players decide on a niche game that they are going to blow out of water in popularity, and this time around, it’s How to Fish’s turn, a fishing-and-combat game from Dazed Games. It drops the players into a chain of islands after a boat crash, and the progress is dependent on one core system: talking to the right characters, hunting the right creatures, and handing in the right proof.
Unfortunately, it’s also very easy to get stuck in one place, and if that happens to describe you as well, then this guide explains perfectly well how you can unlock and discover new islands.

## How Island Unlocks Work in How to Fish

How to Fish keeps the same loop going from island to island: an NPC hands you a task, that task always leads to one specific creature or boss, and killing it isn’t the end of the job. Whatever the boss drops has to make its way back into the NPC’s hands before your radar can light up with the next set of coordinates.
A lot of players get stuck right here without realising it. Beating the boss is only half the job; the other half is making sure to return the one item that counts as proof.
Before looking elsewhere, always check your inventory for a boss-specific item with its own name and description. If you find something like it, then it’s most likely the item that has to be turned in for a new island to be unlocked on your radar.

### Starting Island

Your very first task is escaping the starting shoreline near the lighthouse, where you will find yourself defeating the Spider Crab. When turned in, you will be rewarded with a working boat, from which you will be able to travel to the second island.

### Island #2

The second island introduces a search-and-gather task, where you’ll need to track down a handful of leeches scattered across the ground before the Giant Piranha boss becomes available to fight. It’s important to keep in mind that the fight simply won’t trigger until the leech count is complete.

### Island #3

The third island splits into two connected requests. A tourist NPC first sends you after an endangered species in exchange for a carrot-shaped item, and only once that is secured does the path open toward the Pufferfish encounter.

### Island #4

The fourth island is built around a tuna bait and a Terrorizing Bird boss, followed by a military and volcano-themed stretch where a scientist NPC needs smaller creatures delivered before handing over bait strong enough to lure the area’s Whale boss.
This is the fight that ultimately escalates to the Mutated Bowhead Whale encounter, which in turn clears the way toward the final route back to the mainland.
Again, if a boss goes down and your map still looks unchanged, back up and confirm that the right item made it into the hands of the NPC that gave you the task. Additionally, make sure to let us know in the comments below how far you have made it into the latest Steam hit, How to Fish!
