# How to Fish Spider Crab — The Lighthouse Gate

Bare fists lose. A $24 pair of Brass Knuckles turns this from a wall into a formality.

The Spider Crab is the first boss in How to Fish and the only thing standing between you and the boat. The Lighthouse Keeper will not hand over the keys until you deal with the long-legged creature that has been stealing his beer, and no amount of fishing skill substitutes for that fight. It is also the encounter that teaches the combat grammar used by every later boss: bait the commitment, punish the recovery, leave before the next swing.
Most first-run deaths here are preparation failures rather than execution failures. Three or four claw hits kill you, and punching a boss with bare hands drags the fight long enough that the escape timer runs out even when you are dodging well.

## Prepare before you cast

Earn starting cash the boring way. Clams on the shore sell for a few dollars each and cost nothing but walking, and the Keeper accepts them directly. Buy the basic rod for about $3 and fish the easy shallow creatures to top up. Then spend on damage before anything cosmetic.
Brass Knuckles at roughly $24 are the budget pick and Knife at roughly $45 is the comfortable one. Either turns a stun window into real progress; fists do not. If money allows, sharpen the melee weapon at the anvil, because each tier shortens the number of windows you need to survive. Buy the Radar for about $10 as well — not for the fight, but because you cannot navigate anywhere afterwards without it. The full opening sequence is in Getting Started , and the shop tiers are compared in Weapons & Rods .
Last, buy the Beer for about $12 and give it to the Lighthouse Keeper. He drinks it and hands back an Empty Beer Can. That can is the bait. It is not sold anywhere, so there is no way to skip the errand.

## Summon and kill it

Equip the Empty Beer Can, stand on the wooden dock, cast, and reel. The catch is scripted, so you do not need repeated attempts to hook it — the crab is dragged onto land and the fight begins immediately. Fight on open ground near the dock where you have room to move sideways.
Stay close enough that the crab chooses to charge rather than jump. A charge is readable and always overshoots; a jump is harder to predict and eats the escape timer. When it commits and misses, yellow stars spin over its head and it is stunned for a couple of seconds. Run in, land two or three hits, and back out before the animation ends. Greed is what kills people here — a fourth swing usually trades into a claw.
Repeat the loop. Eat a clam or a cooked fish if your health dips, since hunger and health both drain during a long fight. In co-op the crab is trivial because a second player can hold its attention while the other free-hits, which is covered in the Co-op Guide . On Easy mode from Patch 1.0.9 it has 25% less health and deals 50% less damage, which is a legitimate answer if the timing will not click.

## Claim the boat keys

The kill alone changes nothing. Pick up the crab’s body, walk it to the Lighthouse Keeper on his bench, and hand it over. He gives you the boat keys, which is the actual unlock, and the kill pops the “Who Stole My Beer” achievement tracked in All Achievements . Keep the Spider Crab Shell separate from the ordinary Meat Chunks — the meat can be eaten or sold, the progression item should not be.
With keys and Radar in hand you are done with the Lighthouse. Next stop is the Forest island and the Giant Piranha , and the species you will meet on the way are listed in Lighthouse Island . If you want the wider fight list first, use the All Bosses hub.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the questions players ask most about the game.
The Empty Beer Can. Buy a Beer for about $12, give it to the Lighthouse Keeper, and he returns the empty can. Equip it on your rod and cast from the dock — the catch is guaranteed, so one cast is enough.
It is possible in co-op but a bad solo plan. Fists do so little damage that the escape timer usually expires first. Brass Knuckles at about $24 or a Knife at about $45 fixes the fight outright.
Only after it misses a charge. Yellow stars spin above its head for roughly two seconds, which is room for two or three melee hits. Back away before the stun ends instead of squeezing in a fourth swing.
You have not handed the body in. Carry the corpse to the Lighthouse Keeper on his bench and give it to him — the boat keys come from the hand-in, not from the kill, and the Radar costs another $10 on top.
